Week of April 12th
This week’s show is a Triple Play. I’ve subtitled this show Flyer as every triplet of music is about 10 minutes or less. One or two are longer, but the rest fall in that window.
The Wedding Present:
Granadaland (Bizarro), Corduroy (Seamonsters), and Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah (Watusi)
The Last:
Lies, Snake in the Grass & Everybody Had It With You, all on Look Again
The...
Week of April 5th
Today is my mom’s birthday. This show has absolutely nothing to do with that. I thought I would just mention it for shits and giggles.
This week’s show is about abstractions. I have some long-form cuts that I’ve wanted to break out, but I could not because they don’t fit into the regular flow of the program. This week, I’ve decided to give them their own audience,...

This playlist should be an example of why you do things on time. I have no idea of what this show is about as I write this two weeks later. Seriously. I have no clue of what this show was about. Stay on your game, kids, and don’t do drugs…not that I do…as much.

Week of February 16th
Just figured out that I hadn’t posted this. Wrote the playlist during the show then forgot. Anyway, this was all instrumentals. There were minimal vocal interruptions, and that was by design. We’ll be back with the words this week (week of 23rd).

Fridge - Anglepoised - Early Output
Aphex Twin - Ageispolis - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Crusaders - Covert Action...
Week of February 9th
This show is titled after the first song from the playlist. I had a full vision for this show, but I couldn’t quite get it together in time. As I sat in the on-air studio panicking about whether I blew out a speaker (I didn’t), I realized that this show is becoming a massive time sink in my life. I love doing radio, but I’m also trying to finish grad school next year. I’m...
Week of February 2nd
This program was a compilation of a number of weird things that all involve the number 2. So, the day, obviously, was 2/2/2012, which is clearly a fucking weird date when it comes down to it. Additionally, I had two different people on two different weeks ask me the exact same question: can you put me on to some shoegaze? Going further down the rabbit hole, this week is exactly TWO years from the...

This show is a triple play. The source material is the Trojan Box Sets. I will label what box set then say what tracks I’ve played from them.
Trojan Calypso Box Set:
Lord Kitchener - Love in the Cemetary
Lord Cristo - Dump Boy & The Parrot
Lord Ivanhoe & His Caribbean Knights - The Water Gobbler
Trojan Rude Boy Box Set:
Count Lasher with Lyn Taitt and The Baba Brooks Band -...
Week of January 18th
Not going to lie to you all: this show was slapdash. I figured I could make that a theme, and sort of did. This show ended being a microprogrammed show, which was not something I was expecting at the outset. It worked out well, but I definitely lost the old-school fan by the second hour. I did pick people up, so that’s cool and such.
Anyway, I’ve got better heat this coming week....
Week of December 15th
This show was intended to be a driving mix for late at night. I was also supposed to put up a smooth mix of it. If demand is high enough, I will do that. In the meantime, all you’ll get is the playlist. It came out well although it’s a touch too future for country/rural driving. It would really work better if you are in a crazy urban night situation.
With that said, I did enjoy this...

Week of December 8th
I tried my hardest to theme this show, but I couldn’t. So, I made a show that represented how I felt this week. This is the playlist that I came up with.
adult. - glue your eyelids together - anxiety always
deodato - september 13 - prelude
james pants - wash to sea - seven seals
dominant legs - darling girls - invitation
roxy music - beauty queen - for your pleasure
beach house -...

This week’s show was entitled Daydream. I had a full vision for it, but sometimes, your radio show can’t rule your life; you have to entertain the variety of people that actually give your life its color and relevance. As a result, I couldn’t actually articulate the idea that I had. It was fine as a show, but it wasn’t everything that I think it really could have been.

Next Level Social Networking
So, I’ve been trying to push away from Facebook and move towards Google+ because I think that it’s a better social networking system and also better integrated into my lifestyle. This has been slow since everyone I know still leans towards Facebook. Guess that’s part of being the one for the better part of the last decade.
Anyway, as you may have figured out by now, this is not...
Week of November 17th
This show is entitled “This Year’s Hits Today!” Why? Seemed like a good idea at the time. Anyway, this show was meant more as an exploration of my own archive of new music than anything else. I’ve piled up a lot of records over these past eleven months+, and I wanted to see how many of them were actually any good. Turns up that more of them are really, really good in fact....

Week of November 3rd
This show was entitled Love and Hate. It was two separate shows, merged at the middle with an awkward transition. This show was originally born as a show where every track played as one containing a swear. That wasn’t feasible actually, so I did this instead.
Love:
loretta lynn and conway twitty - you lay so easy on my mind - louisana woman mississippi man
patsy cline - i love you honey...
Updates Soon
I seem to get swamped a lot, so I can’t update as I would like. I have three weeks to post. They will be up in the next 48 hours. Guaranteed.
Week of October 24th
This was a show of covers (save one unfortunate playing of a request). I hate to go on a diatribe, but I wonder if people listening to my show are actually listening to my show. I said multiple times that my show was a cover show, yet I still got a non-cover request. I know that I do theme programming, but covers are a surprisingly easy thing to get right. I know I have a lot of covers. I know...

Week of October 20th
This is the long-delayed Triple Play. I had a lot of ideas for this third installment, but it ended up being about lo-fi recordings. By this, I meant music recorded in basements, bedrooms or on tape decks. Everything sounded particularly poor quality and was made on substandard equipment. In short, the show was totally awesome. This playlist will be listed like regular Triple Play lists with...
Week of October 13th
Alright, this was Sydney’s last show as my apprentice. She went out in the most appropriate way possible: playing songs by lady rappers. There’s a certain comedy to the premise of this show as Sydney is a moderately inoffensive lady that plays with lasers by professional choice (she’s in physics). I still laugh at the idea of her singing “Yankin’” to herself...
Updates
Are coming soon. I’ve been a little bit busy recently, so I haven’t had time to attend to this blog. I’ve got this on the docket tomorrow for after band practice.
By the way, if you are in Iowa City on November 12, come see my band. We are playing over at 713 E Washington St. It’s going to be SUPER rad. It will also be the start of more frequent public appearances for...
Week of October 7th
So, Sydney did this show and the theme was one that will always play well with this program: Death. The playlist is slightly different in format than usual. There are no album names, so if you want to track things down, you’ll have to do that on your own time.
Iron & Wine - “Die” Architecture In Helsinki - “Cemetery” Starfucker - “Death As A Fetish”...

This week’s show spun off of my social media usage. I was reading my Google+ feed (you can find this show on Google+ if you’ve switched over. If you want to follow my personal brand of lifestyle, my personal profile can be found at gplus.to/achawleyisdead), and I caught a post from my editor over at Little Village about Enya. The song he posted was really pretty and very smooth. It...

Week of September 15th
So, this was an important show in two ways. The first is that this is the first show of my new apprentice Sydney. I already know Sydney, so there wasn’t any awkward getting-to-know-each-other chit chat. The other is that this was the last house music show. I played a trick on my listening audience though. Rather than playing “oontz-oontz-oontz” house music, I played music about...
A New School Rap Quotable
Gudda Gudda on Dedication 3 (Killed Wayne on this track):
They say powder makes you hyper Reefer makes you calm Cigarettes give u cancer Well wounds make you dull While I sip the purple harlot Thick as my sudden drawl Put me on the ocean floor wit a mermaid wit no draws They got bats up in the cave Upside down blood rushing to they head They reacting off sound as I stand on the mound Pitchin for...
Week of September 8th
This show is entitled The Club Classics. As I noted on the show, this title is a bit of a misnomer because I have no idea of what those particular tracks are. I know a couple of them, but there haven’t been enough clubs in my life to know the exact answer to this. I love house music, but I super have little interest in being around that many people. If you can figure out a solution to that...
Week of September 1st
This blog post exists as a marker to the fact I did a radio show this week. I didn’t like this show so much. It was fine, but I thought that it could have gone considerably better than it actually did.
It contained two separate thoughts. The first was building playlists from Gus Gus’s 1997 album Polydistorsion. That was fine for the first two blocks, but then I got offensively...
Week of August 25th
This show is meant as a tribute to the new Freshman class here at the University of Iowa. They are a scrappy bunch that will turn out at least three really shady radio programs during their first semester (if they decide to get on the radio). I did shady programming because it’s just what happens. When I was a freshman, I did shady electronic programming. So, in tribute to the youth, I did a...

I’ve been off of my blogging game recently, so I apologize for that. Anyway, this playlist is real and does exist. I’m not going to type it up here though. The reason for this is that it is fully audible on Spotify.

Week of July 21st
I came up with this week’s show while I was sitting in my girlfriend’s apartment this morning. It’s entitled A Psychedelic Nightmare. It’s weird, but alright, I think. This show features a mix of neo-psych, underground psych, witch house, and shoegaze. The DJ after me does through and through psych, so I don’t really want to step on his toes. Compliment? Maybe. I,...
Week of July 14th
This show features artists who all start with the word “The”. This is, easily, one of the laziest themes I’ve come up with in a while but also one that I’ve wanted to do for a considerable amount of time now. It’s challenging to do. You should try it sometime and try not to play the songs that you have the majority of. You’ll be surprised by how this theme...

This week is a Triple Play show. I told you I was going to institute recurring themes. Lo and behold! Remembrance! USA! USA! Anyway, all of this music is pulled from the KRUI archives. Lot of college rock.

Nancy Sinatra - Some Velvet Morning w/ Lee Hazlewood - The Essential Nancy Sinatra

Updates and Future Programs
Happy July 4th to everyone! I’m currently at a barbeque with a bunch of white people in a pool. This is something that doesn’t usually occur in my lifestyle, so I do need to note it at some level.
Anyway, I have the most recent show up on the email and will transfer it over to the blog very soon. In terms of upcoming shows, I have the second version of triple play coming up soon. I...

This week was called new acquisitions. It’s all of the newer things out of my recent pick-ups that I’m really into, some more chronologically newer than others. I didn’t get to all of it because I never do, but I think I filtered out the choicest cuts. I’m going to post a little bit more on this on the other blog that I run for Mission Creek because it’s around time...
Week of June 9th
This show was entitled First Track. I sampled from both my digital and analog collections. Unfortunately for me, I forgot to make them talk to each other. I found this show to be a little bit uneven for my taste.
I think that it went off well, but when I got the request for Suicide at the beginning of the show, I realized that I was going to have some problems down the road. It was a...

There was a time in the past (like 2008) when I realized that I was a) coming to the University of Iowa and b) doing programming on the station. I mean, I had mad pedigree (I still do). I had to come up with a name. I’ve been obsessed with sound systems and show titles that flow smoothly from “you’re listening to…” Past examples have included The Afterschool Rhythm,...
