Week of April 21st
NB: I started writing this last week on my phone. Unfortunately, my phone tumblr and my web tumblr don’t talk to each other. They are like cold exes.
This week, the show was an experiment in a term that I had come up with earlier in the day: microprogramming. I have a two-hour radio show as most people can probably ascertain from past playlists. The idea of microprogramming is to do a series of smaller shows within the space of the larger show format. I don’t mean different sets or something of that nature. I mean, radically different shows with the span of my regular radio show. While this idea originally developed out of necessity, I think it will be an interesting way to program future radio show. Also, I really enjoyed the shift from one part to the next; I found it to be rather enjoyable.
For the first excursion into this realm, I did two genres that would other otherwise never been seen together: country/folk and early-ish synth dance music. The country stemmed from my want to play some Emmylou Harris on my radio show. The synth stuff: I’ve had it stuck in my head for a couple of weeks because it’s really good actually. Linear Movement’s album is in heavy rotation with Broadcast in my house right now. But that is actually immaterial.
When planning the show, I wanted sad contemplation for the first half then straight up rocking as coldly as possible for the second half. If you don’t know what cold rocking is, it’s when you put your hand in the pocket of your members only jacket and just rock your body as hard as you could. These were not songs that you could freak out to; they were too cold for that. If you don’t know what I mean by cold, you need to get a copy of “So Young But So Cold” and you will understand what I mean. Darkwave, coldwave, minimal synth: that’s being cold.
This week’s show did have a name bizarrely enough. It’s Country on the Click. Named after The Fall record, but there’s not a single Fall song played this week. You figure that out while you’re eating yourself fitter.
