Week of June 2nd
There was a time in the past (like 2008) when I realized that I was a) coming to the University of Iowa and b) doing programming on the station. I mean, I had mad pedigree (I still do). I had to come up with a name. I’ve been obsessed with sound systems and show titles that flow smoothly from “you’re listening to…” Past examples have included The Afterschool Rhythm, An An Afternoon Rendez-vous, Dance Free, and No Jive. Unlike those shows, I wanted a title that I could keep for more than one semester. I wanted to aim towards developing a listener base for this whole experiment in sound.
In thinking about this process in those terms, I came up with The Tom Brands Method, which was derived from the totally crazy, totally awesome wrestling coach here at the University of Iowa. The dude is an utter badass and a fantastic wrestler. He brings 1000% Intensity even to fundraising dinners. Google him ripping his shirt off to see what I mean. Utter awesomeness.
While you see this post on the blog for the Chrysanthemum Sound System, this show was a couple of thoughts away from being The Brands Method. I had actually forgotten this entire backstory until I was eating a cheeseburger at the Hilltop (probably the best burger I’ve had in IC yet, but I can argue about that with someone in the real world later).
The show is based off of the initial vision that I had of the show if I were to follow that name. It was going to go non-stop, full throttle, stepping on the throats of those who wanted to half-step. I like changing tempos too much, so this show could have never happened for me. That said, this week’s show was a touch of what you could have come to expect if I had kept the Brands Method as my title. This could happen again, but probably not any time soon. It’s too hot to thrash around these parts right now.
